New York Athletic Club - 2013 A.L.L. Champions
The 2013 American Lacrosse League Championship game, held at Malvern Prep School in Malvern, PA, saw a rematch from two years ago when NYAC defended their title, downing Magerk’s 15-12. This year marked Magerk’s third straight trip to the championship game, beating GMH Lacrosse last year 11-10 to take the title back below the Mason-Dixon Line.

NYAC was the first to get on the scoreboard when midfielder Zach Brenneman powered his way from up top through the Magerk’s defense to take the early 1-0 lead. NYAC’s defense became very stingy early on, smothering the Magerk’s offense at ever chance. Magerk’s finally got on the scoreboard when attackman Mike Mundorf found Jordan Kenny in transition to tie the game 1-1. Magerk’s led for the first time, 2-1, when Mundorf scored on a falling down, acrobatic shot that got past NYAC goalie Rob Tonnessen, who recorded six saves in the game. NYAC was able to tie the game at 2-2, when attackman Zach Howell got the ball from Brenneman off of a scramble on the right wing. Magerk’s took the lead again when midfielder Kyle Moffit ripped a left-handed shot from 14 yards to go up 3-2.

The second quarter saw a complete turnaround for both teams, with NYAC dominating the quarter from beginning to end. NYAC faceoff man PJ Santora battled counterpart Greg Furshmen to a 50-50 draw throughout the game, but had his way in the second quarter giving NYAC critical possessions. LSM Chris Nixon found net when Howell found him in transition, ripping a bounce shot past Magerk’s goalie Chris Petrush, who recorded 20 saves on the day, tying the game at 3-3.

Magerk’s came right back, going up 4-3 when attackman Jimmy Dailey found Mundorf open to score. NYAC tied the game again when midfielder Tyler Moni scored off of a feed from midfielder Scott Kocis. NYAC regained the lead when Howell found attackman Max Quinzani on a cross field pass, putting them up 5-4, a lead that they wouldn’t surrender. NYAC extended their lead to 6-4, off of a 15 yard lefty shot from midfielder Kyle Bergman. Magerk’s battled back to a 6-5 game when Mundorf roll dodged his way to a score off the right side. NYAC regained its two goal lead when Kocis power dodged and muscled his way past two defenders to go up 7-5. Magerk’s again got it to a one goal game when Jimmy Dailey scored on a diving wrap-around shot from right side behind. NYAC’s Chris Nixon got his second goal, regaining a 8-6 lead when Quinzani fed him on the crease after clearing the ball. NYAC outscored Magrk’s 6 to 3 in the second to take control of the game.

The third quarter was uneventful compared to the previous one. Kyle Moffit was able to place one past goalie Mike Novosel, who had five saves in the second half, making it an 8-7 game. NYAC would not let Magerk’s get any closer, going back up 9-7 when attackman Mike McCall got a feed from attackman Eric Pittard off of the end line. Magerk’s fought right back, making it a 9-8 game to end the third when Jordan Kenny hit Jimmy Dailey for his second goal of the game.

The fourth quarter saw NYAC extend their 9-8 lead to 14-8 on goals from Howell (2), Quinzani, John Cunningham and Dan Savage.

The win gives NYAC its fourth American Lacrosse League title in six years.

Congratulations to the new champions on a perfect season and a job well done.
